Trading Psychology

Dear Fellow-Trader.

This is a topic that is crucial and vitally important to trading.

It’s a Market of Emotions and 90% of all trading is based on psychology!

That’s a fact just like it is a fact that 90% of all traders who ever trade lose money and that 10% actually make a total loss going bankrupt. If the first number doesn't set off your alarm bells then the second definitely should.

But why is it then that such a large number of traders get driven by psychology and fail? Intelligent people with a high level of education watch their trading accounts erode taking one loss after the other.

So why do traders fail?

Without Education And an Understanding of The Psychology of The Market Your Chances of Profitable Trading are Profoundly Limited!

While the trading instruments that make up the market have no emotions, the individuals that trade those instruments are human beings and are very emotional by nature. Realizing that the human emotions of fear and greed often drive prices up and down, allows one to begin to understand how to position oneself on the right side of the market. Because humans are very emotional, they often make rash decisions that end up being the wrong decision.

Every day there’s huge struggle being waged in the markets. A struggle between the bulls (buyers and the bears (sellers). Bears want to get top dollars for their equity, while the bulls want to pay as little as possible. In order for a transaction to be completed, one has to give into the other’s terms. If a greedy bull gives into a seller’s terms because he feels he just has to own XYZ stock, the price goes up. If an eager bear gives into a buyer’s terms, the price goes down. This is nothing new. It’s basic economics. It’s supply and demand.

Because both buyers and sellers are, more often than not, basing their buying and selling decisions on emotions, eventually these emotions will culminate and a trend will reverse. For example, when a stock is in an uptrend, there will be a point when the trend will become apparent to everyone. At this point there will often be one last buying frenzy as greed takes over in fear of missing the boat. It is precisely at this point that the trend will often reverse.

The same is true of a downtrend. Before a stock hits bottom, there usually is a panic-kind-of-selling as fear takes over and the weak run for cover. Once all the weak have thrown in the towel, the stock is free to rise again. This behaviour can be observed time and time again.

Often a stock doesn’t just drop because everyone starts selling. It begins to drop because everyone stops buying, at which point the price has to come down to entice more buyers. As the price begins to decline, the selling begins to pick up, forcing the price even lower. It isn’t until all the sellers are flushed out of the market that the selling stops. Now the demand for the stock becomes greater causing it to rise again and attracting more and more buyers.

If you have ever looked at a significant market bottom like the one after September 11, 2001 (9/11), you will notice that the selling pressure increased significantly due to the emotional insecurity of what might happen next. Once the selling became exhausted, prices stabalized and the crowd began to buy the market in droves.

Getting A Grip On Emotions

As individuals we have to realize and accept that we have no control and influence over the market nor the direction it’s taking. And thus, there are two crucial emotions that come into play and that we have to be aware of. Fear and Greed!

Fear:

The problem is that we all want to succeed and when we do make a loss, it is easy to let those losses effect us emotionally out of fear to lose even more.

In this case, a trader exits a trade as soon as the market hits the slightest bump even though the broad market is very bullish and the fundamentals of the company he’s trading are good. So instead of being patient and waiting for the trade to go up again, he sells and accepts the initial loss out of fear of losing even more.

Fear of losses can also show up in the following way.

Irrespective of any rationality, a trader holds on to a losing position for too long hoping for it to go up again. Even when the news and fundamentals are hopeless he won’t give up forgetting that this attitude can easily lead to a total loss.

In another case, fear can also manifest itself in not wanting to miss the boat and quickly jumping on. This can very often be observed by novices who listen to tips from friends and TV, where so called “experts” or shall I rather say, “opinion makers” speak up trying to sweet-talk you into a trade.

A trader sees the market go up rapidly and confirmation is all over the news. The excitement of a rising market is in full swing. Afraid of missing out, the trader makes a hasty decision and dives right into a trade.

Greed:

Becoming euphoric when you hit a winning trade is almost as detrimental as becoming depressed when you have a losing trade.

In this case a trader is actually afraid of losing a profit. He holds on to a winning position for too long. His trade is doing so well that he just can’t get enough. He may have made a 100% profit and now expects to make another 100%. And when his position goes down below this magic mark, he still holds on hoping for his trade to go back to 100% again before he sells instead of accepting say, 90%, which is darn good too!

But what was a 100% profit can easily become a total loss if you let greed take control!

I’ve seen traders that have watched their profits erode without doing anything about it. They held on to their positions right up to an almost total loss. Very often they then say: ”Oh well. my trade has gone down so much now, what’s the use of selling? I won’t get much out of it now anyway, so I might as well keep my position”. Well, I guess in a way he’s right because by this time his stocks may have more value being used as wall-paper.

In another case, fear of losing out on a profit may even cause a trader to sell a winning trade too soon. As soon as his position went up a few percent, he bails out.

So watch out for fear and greed. These two guys aren’t good advisers and they’re not the way to trade!

And so. As traders we have to be rather impartial.

We have to accept that there will be losses just as there will be wins in any one’s trading career!
Reaching the stage where you can comfortably accept losses, and knowing that you have a good trading system that will also produce profits most times in the longer term is the state we all have to aspire to.

Online Trading Is Quick And Easy But Online Investing Takes Time

It seems like it should be so easy to make money online trading stocks, commodities, currencies, and anything your heart desires. It seems as though anyone with a computer with internet access should be able to be a complete online trading guru within just a few short months. Imagine the state of the economy if everyone who can operate their email account could also earn a full time income with just a few mouse clicks and an open heart.

I know that the online investment companies would like you to believe that it is so simple to make money online trading the specialty that you choose, but not everyone can. At least not at first. This sort of trading takes time and a little education.

Everyone can learn to ride a bike. Some people take longer than others to grasp the concept of pushing the pedal to get started while others simply lack the patience to learn how to ride a bike. Others never really had the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike. Making money online trading any type of legal exchange is no different. Some people will grasp it right away while others may require years of attempts. Some may not have had the opportunity before, but provided they can gain access to a computer with internet access, they can create their own opportunity.

Online trading companies make a fortune in abandon desires. You set yourself up at your computer and you thought you did all the research and time and time again you clicked your mouse looking for your big windfall. When it doesn’t work, you have one of two options. You can continue to try or you can shrug your shoulders and believe there are other dream making concepts floating around the internet. It is unfortunate how many people leave their hopes and dreams behind, bouncing along on a fiber optic wire with no direction to head. We live in an instantaneous society, and lacking the patience for learning the process is the number one killer of online investment promises.

I know. Some internet guru promised you a quick and easy return on your investment in a ridiculously short amount of time and it hasn’t happened yet. You shelled out your end of the $49.99 and your promises weren’t returned. What they forgot to tell you was that everything they promised you can come true, provided you can find the patience and fortitude to move forward with the learning process before expecting your big payoff.

Anyone can open an account and dabble in making money through online trading, but those who make serious money have gone through a process that not only educates them, but gives them the courage and confidence necessary to trade well. This isn’t something that you can’t accomplish, provided that you want to. And sometimes wanting to accomplish something is more than half of the requirement for success. Online trading does not have be a big mystery for those willing to look beyond the basics.

Trading Stocks Online - What Works

Imagine you are trying to do car repairs, and the only tool you have is a hammer. Sure, you’ll be able to get some jobs done, but they won’t be done properly and you’ll most likely break something else in the process. Trading stocks online is much like that. There are many ways to trade, but only some of them truly work. Sometimes, investors end up losing money because they didn’t take the time to find the proper investment method or tool. Here are some tips that can help you to trade successfully.
If you want to reduce the risk that comes with holding an investment, you will want to look into the practice known as hedging. One of the best ways to hedge your investments is to take any shares you have in a company and sell them to the company’s opposition.
For stability, you will want to look to investing a pre-arranged amount of money each month into one or more mutual funds. Mutual funds are composed of shares from approximately 10 companies, and often focus on a specific area of the market, such as energy, paper, or currency. Although there is still a risk that you can lose money through your mutual funds, they are much more stable and have a much higher chance of recovery, based on the fact that they center on stocks from more than one company. Be patient if the market takes a downturn; don’t sell your funds or stock immediately. History has shown that if a market goes down, it will also go up.
Another online trading tactic is to look at the stock market and find good, stable companies whose stock has taken a downturn. The way to find them is to look for ones that have dividend yields. Pick several of these companies and invest equal amounts of money in buying stocks from each of them. Although there is risk involved with this method, the history and stability of these companies is often enough to pull them through the slump they may be experiencing. And when their stocks begin to rise in value, you will benefit from this wise trading investment.

Day Trading Commodity Markets

Traders who trade for a living are generally swing traders or day traders. If you are planning to day trade in commodities, then you need to get hold of a reliable trading system that gives good results consistently. Despite having such a system, there are a few things you may want to know about day trading in the commodity markets.

Day Trading Defined

Those who trade and complete all their trades within the period of a day’s trading session are known as day traders. Day traders have to square off all their trades by the end of the 24-hour period. That is their time limit. If they hold their positions for any longer, they can then be called position traders, and not day traders. They are the most common form of traders to be found in commodity markets.

Day traders like to churn their capital on a day to day basis to maximize its return. They prefer not to lock in capital for extended periods of time. More often than not, they have very limited capital to leverage, and cannot afford to block it all. Speed is the name of the game where day trading in commodity futures is concerned.

Facts About Day Trading

It has been observed that you stand a better chance of earning money in day trading commodity markets if you are prepared to invest a bigger amount of money. This is because more money gives you the option to diversify your investment and manage the risks better.

An important component of commodity futures trading, is using charts that allow you to decide what you want to do. Secondly, those who follow trends taste success.

As in all things, there are limitations that day traders face. The most important one is that they trade in a single day’s session. Hence, they cannot let their profits run any longer even if they want to – they are limited by time. They prefer by choice to take the money and run. Time is money, and time is limited. Another issue that crops up at some time or another for day traders is their stops. They cannot have too large a stop for fear of losing a lot of money. Therefore, they have to keep narrow stops, and thus increase their chances of being whipsawed out of a trade early. Ask any old hand about being whipsawed, and they will tell you that it is a part of the game. Daily ranges also limit targets, as the luxury of hanging on is not available. Quick profits are targeted, and many a time commodity day traders have to get out of a trade at the end of the day having made very little or no money from it.

However, day traders are not to be under estimated in any way. They truly form the volume numbers of the commodity market. Many intraday movements are because of day traders. They cause sudden spurts in commodity prices with heavy buying or selling. An integral part of the market, they form the backbone of the commodity market.

Commodities: An Overview

Commodities are products traded solely on the basis of price. The products are undifferentiated products, goods or services that are not traded based on quality and features, only on price. Historically, commodities were items of value, of uniform quality that were produced in large quantities by many different producers. The items from each different producer were considered equivalent. Commodities are defined by an underlying contract and standard, rather than the quality of the product.

History

Chicago was the birth place of the first commodities market, way back in the 1840s. Farmers would bring their wheat to the market and exchange it for good, hard cash. Futures contracts developed from there. A farmer would contract with a dealer to sell a set amount of produce to him at a set date for a set price. It was comforting for both parties since the farmer knew how much he was going to get paid and the dealer knew exactly how much he was going to pay for these commodities.

This practice of commodities trading evolved over the years that ensued. The farmer would decide not to sell and cede the contract to another farmer to fulfil, or the dealer might decide that he did not want the produce anymore and then on-sell the contract to another dealer. Naturally supply and demand entered the equation. If the harvests were poor, the produce would fetch a much higher price and if the crops were abundant, a leaner price prevailed.

Before long, speculators were in on the act. They started trading the futures contracts in the hope of buying the commodities at a low price and selling these for a handsome profit.

What defines a successfully tradable commodity?

To successfully trade, commodities must:

·Be standardized. If the commodities industrial or agricultural, it must be unprocessed.

·Have an adequate shelf-life, if these are agricultural.

·There should be sufficient fluctuation in supply and concomitantly price. The reason for this is that without the risk factor, profits are meagre and unappetising.

Examples of commodities are: electricity, wheat, chemicals, metals, pork bellies, RAM chips, labour and currency.

Difference between commodities and stocks

The main difference between stocks and futures contracts from a trading perspective is that, unlike stocks, which you could keep for a very long time, commodities are held for a very short time only. Futures contracts are used to hedge commodity price-fluctuation risks or to take advantage of price movements, instead of trading the actual cash commodities.

How are commodities traded?

Commodity Future and option trading take place at exchanges such as the Chicago Board of Trade, Euronext.liffe, London Metal Exchange and the New York Mercantile Exchange, and other online trading systems. At the exchanges, areas are provided, each designated for a different futures contract. Those trading on the floor must be members of the exchange and registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Those traders, who are not members, work through brokerage firms who are.

To conclude

Commodity future option trading is both complex and risky, so the shoe may not necessarily fit just anybody’s foot. If you are considering commodity future option trading, you should evaluate how much you are prepared to lose should push come to shove. Choose a trading method that you are comfortable with and that is best suited to achieving your objectives. The bottom line in commodity future option trading is that, if you exercise good judgment and manage your risks effectively, commodities trading are likely to richly reward your efforts!

How Not To Buy Stocks – Do These And You Are Sure To Lose Money

If only I had read an article like this before I dived into the world of stock investing. I must say, three years ago I knew absolutely nothing about how to buy stocks. Of course, through that experience I learned several ways on how to buy stocks and lose money.

Buy stocks without doing research – I joined a discount brokerage and went shopping for stocks right away. I had no clue what I was supposed to look for so I just picked random names I liked and bought a few shares here and there of each.

I must admit, I thought I was doing quite well. I mean, some of the stocks I picked ended up doing alright, but the majority of them when no where fast. So if you want to make sure you fail at buying stocks, skip the research.

Don't Consider the Trading Fees – Learning how to buy stocks the wrong way is easy when you don't consider trading fees. I must admit, when I joined the discount brokerage I was really excited about their $4 trades. What I forgot to calculate was the math.

I was investing an average of $10 per stock when I bought them. Shelling out $4 for a $10 piece of stock meant I was losing 40% right up front each time. When I decided to sell the stock I had to pay another $15 just to sell! You can see where I am going with this, it can turn into quite a fiasco.

Don't Diversify – The surefire method for how to buy stocks the wrong way is to buy a single stock and nothing else. Throw all your nest egg into one company. I mean, so many people do it, especially in their companies at work. What is in your company 401K?

Having all your eggs in one basket sets you up for quite a roller coaster, except there is no safety rails on this ride. You could easily lose everything.

Buy High and Sell Low – The market is fickle so if you want to set yourself up for failure, go with the masses. I admit, it is very tempting to see a stock going higher and higher and yet... higher again.

This makes people want to buy it more, increasing its demand and running the price up even higher. This is great right?

Sure, it can be sometimes, but if the stock is overvalued you are really learning how to buy stock the wrong way with this purchase.

To buy stocks the wrong way, sell the stock as soon as the price dips some. Even if the company is solid. Following the herd is a great way to go down the wrong path.

Hold On To a Losing Stock To Try and “Break Even” - I bought a popular stock for $63 a share, not too long later it dropped into the $40 range.

The research showed the company was not doing so well, but I wanted to at least get my purchase price back. I mean, it is sure to bounce back up right?

Fast forward a few weeks and it was in the $30 range. Dang, I should have sold it at $40 when I had the chance. Well, I am going to at least wait until it gets back into the $40 range before I sell it.

Fast forward... it is below $20 a share now. Keeping a stock when both the price and the company are going downhill is a sure way to learn how to buy stocks the wrong way.

Avoid Learning The Right Ways - If you really want to learn how to buy stocks the wrong way through the school of hard knocks, make sure not to discover the right ways.

Stock Market Trading Styles - Scalping, Momentum Trading, Swing Trading And Trend Trading

There are a number of stock market trading styles that different kind of traders use. There is no best kind of style, but each is suited to a trader’s needs and situation. The following are a few of the styles that are common in the market. There are generally four primary stock market trading styles. These are swing trading, trend trading, momentum trading and scalping.

Choosing which style you wish to use depends on your situation. An investor’s time frame is the main aspect to look at when deciding which style is best for them. The correct pairing of trading style and pairing will ensure you are profitable in your efforts in the stock market. This ranges from the aggressive day traders to the conservative long-term-investors.

Scalping

Scalping are trades that are done (bought and sold) during a very short period of time. This can mean that a buy and sell in just a matter of minutes. Each trade makes very small margins but a trader generally would make many transactions in a day. Scalpers, usually aim for high volume stocks which are liquid. They try to buy on daily lows and sell immediately when the stock goes up. It is also a good method for investors who do not have a lot of capital and reuse their capital n every trade.

Momentum Trading

Momentum trading is when a trader sees a stock price picking up and joins it. The investor will take a short or long position in the stock anticipating that the momentum of the stock will continue. This is generally how bubbles grow, due to many traders jumping onto an accelerating stock. Investing period for momentum trading is around a day.

Swing Trading

The general time frame for swing trading is one to four days. This is most common among mom and dad investors. Stocks are often chosen on the basis of technical analysis. Swing traders generally have the advantage of not having too much competition form major traders. Technical analysis I used to looked for indicators of short term price movements. Swing traders rarely do any fundamental analysis as they are looking for short term fluctuations. The majority of their decisions are based on price trends and patterns.

Trend Trading

The time frame for trend traders is around a month. This looks at a securities’ long-term momentum direction. As investors are holding the stock for longer there is a greater deal of risk involved. It is wise for trend traders to do fundamental and technical analysis on the stock. The main indicators that trend traders look for are higher highs. This indicates that a stock is trending upward.

It is very important for a trader to choose the correct style of trading depending on their time frame. Each requires a totally different kind of analysis and each style of trader will have a different set of securities in their portfolio. There are risks associated with all styles with Trend Trading being the riskiest and Scalping being the safest.

Day Trading, Swing Trading, Or Long-Term Trading - How Do You Choose To Profit?

There are many different ways to profit in todays exciting stock market. Long term investing in the stock market is a good option for those who put their trust in companies that are reliable and are continuing to grow. This can yield excellent results for investors and has long been the norm in stock investing. This is not the only way to profit from today's vibrant market as there are many different trading opportunities available.

Short-term traders can also find investment opportunities in the market. Market prices can change rapidly when traders get nervous and sell their stocks or go into a buying frenzy. This type of trader psychology can make stock prices fall quickly, and sometimes rise rapidly. This may happen even when the fundamental financial numbers don’t reflect this.

Why do traders get nervous about their stocks? It could be as simple as a rumor, or more reliable resources like news reports and government concerns about the economy. This could cause an investor to think that a company will find financial trouble or increase in value. If a stock goes up or down, some traders will dive into the stock and cause the price per stock to rise quickly. The market will once again fall back into place, but quick-witted. short-term traders are smart to watch the market and take advantage of price changes that may offer a profit.

Position Traders - Of the three styles of trading, position trading has the longest term of trading. Position trading stocks may be kept for a long time as compared with day trading and others short-term stock trading methods. These traders will choose to hold on to their stocks for months to several years. Position traders will wait for a fundamental change in the financial reports, industry analysis, or stock value before they consider selling their stock. Position trading requires little time from the investor. The stock holder will simply check the market reports daily to plan their trading strategies. This is great for the person who is just looking to make a little income on the side. The investor may work a half hour a day after their regular day of work.

Swing Traders - A swing trader is an trader who generally holds stock for a short period of time, typically from one to five days. A swing trader looks to jump on market swings. This technique of trading will require a lot of time, but also can often yield sizeable return on investment. They will usually research stocks and plan investments for several hours a day. Swing traders look for trends in the market to help map out their opportunities. They use intraday and daily charts to predict how their stock may move.

Day Traders - For those who enjoy taking risks and like fast-paced trading action, day trading is a perfect way to play the market. Those who are educated day traders have learned how to decrease their risk and maximize potential profit. A day trader is someone who buys and sells stocks very quickly. The stocks could be bought and sold for a few minutes or a few hours, but always held on to for less than a day. Day traders frequently analyze data on the tick, minute, and hourly levels. This is not the place for an emotional trader. Because this type of trade requires so much time, it is only recommended for someone who wants to do this full-time.

Is Momentum Trading For You?

Momentum traders seem to get involved in this type of stock transactions because they love the rush they receive in trading volatile stocks.

Of course, that may be just the reason why you shouldn’t get involved. Momentum traders find stocks that are on an upward or a downward swing when they invest in the company. They make money by buying low and selling high or by buying high and selling higher. But as with any kind of investing, there are no guarantees.

Momentum traders must do a lot of work to gather their information. They must read business papers and the online news sites to see which companies are creating the most buzz. The companies that are releasing new products or that must hold a news conference to explain a product failure are going to be of particular interest because they have the greatest possibility of a momentum run.

As a momentum trader you will need to closely follow corporate earning releases and pay attention to what the business forecasters are predicting. In short, it can be a pretty time consuming endeavour. The good news is that as a momentum trader, you aren’t just looking for companies whose stock is doing well. A company whose stock is about to nosedive is perfectly suitable for your purposes.

Once you have narrowed down your selection of stocks your research is not over. You now have to take the time to analyze the stock’s EPS earning per share) also known as accelerated earnings. Seeing how well a stock did over the past three quarters is an excellent barometer of what the stock’s potential is. You will have to check out the morning equity options pages to determine if there have been an excessive number of written calls out on the company you are researching because the higher number of calls can indicate whether a stock price increase or decrease is anticipated to occur.

You are looking to find a breakout stock so the initial morning trading must be watched very closely to see if there is one stock that stands out. Watch the current bid/ask price and the total daily volumes. If you can identify a stock then it is time to buy. Now this is the most difficult part of momentum trading. You are now going to ride the momentum train and although it can be very exhilarating, it is not for the feint of heart.

Once you have clicked the buy option, you simply have to watch and wait to see how the stock does. Will the momentum continue or will the stock just fizzle out? That is something that happens to the best of momentum traders. Sometimes you pick a dud and the best thing to do is cut your losses and get out.

Do you have nerves of steel? Do you have plenty of time to spend reading the business news, Wall Street Journal and a plethora of other sources from the Internet? There is the potential to make a great deal of money with momentum trading, but you must know and understand yourself before deciding to jump into the fray.

Online Trading And System Trading

Indeed, online trading has revolutionalised the way common folks like you and me trade
in the capital markets.

Online Commodities Trading For Beginners

The economic downturn has many people worried about recession, and inflation rates seem to be rising every other week. In light of such uncertain times, have you ever wondered if investing your hard earned dollars into the stock market is the prudent thing to do? Or are you already considering alternative forms of investment? If so, consider online commodities trading, because depending on your knowledge, risk appetite, and the commodities you choose, you have the potential to earn big returns on your investment.

But if you’re a greenhorn at the commodity market, or even at trading for that matter, you might be wondering what commodities trading is all about. Commodities trading is where traders trade contracts for goods, and not for the goods themselves; goods such as food like corn or malt, or metals like gold and silver. The traders don’t have to deliver the goods to some end-consumer at the end of the day, because they don’t have the goods to begin with, and most likely never will have them. A trader would instead buy a contract if he thought that the price for a commodity would be going up in the future. He would then sell the contract if he thought the price would depreciate. Think of it as a kind of insurance plan for the traders and investors; regardless of price fluctuations, both the buyer and the seller are guaranteed the price stated in the contract at the time of trade. Just like any business transaction, there is always a buyer and seller in every trade made, but neither the buyer or the seller is required to own a particular commodity in order for the trade to happen. The only thing that a trader has to do is to deposit enough capital with a brokerage firm to ensure that he would be able to pay for his losses if his trade loses money. This is known as commodity futures trading.

So now that the concept of commodities trading is out of the way, why trade online?

Online commodities trading involves the transmission of orders by customers to either buy or sell a commodity to a commodity exchange via an electronic marketplace. Unlike the traditional offline method of trading, no brokers are required to represent customers. However, having an online broker would cost you less commissions-wise than if you were to have a full-service broker. As such, you stand to be more profitable on your trades than if you were to trade offline.

Online commodities trading also provides you with almost everything you need the moment you log into your trading account. Most online brokers are equipped with real time information, ranging from futures news, price quotes, charts, technical analysis programs, and other research material that are made available for their clients. As such, those who wish to embark on online trading on their own are able to make more informed decisions when trading because the same tools have been made available for them online.

However, despite the apparent advantages of online commodities trading, one would also have to be aware of the pitfalls that are associated with online commodities trading.

For one thing, because you have the freedom to make your own trades online, there is no one watching over your shoulder to guide you along with your trades. Inexperienced traders usually lose money this way, because they think that the tools made available to them through trading online make great substitutes for experience. The fact is that nothing can substitute experience, and having an experienced broker by your side would most likely help you avoid such losses. Treat the broker as a mentor if you’re just starting out; learn by asking questions and having them answered within minutes instead of spending hours or days researching on your own.

Another issue to take note of is over trading. The temptation to be swayed from one’s original plan of holding trades for a period of time rather than ‘capitalizing’ on small breaks in the market trend are usually the cause of traders losing a sum of money, most often the considerable portion of it is by way of commissions. Even though commissions on every trade may be cheap, every commission compounds to every trade made; worse still if the trade results in a loss. So while it might be a good idea to seize a good opportunity when you see one, make sure you have a plan tailored for every trade you intend on making, instead of changing your strategies blindly just because you’re lured by the possibility of making a quick buck.

While online commodities trading may seem like a prudent investment option in these uncertain times, it requires discipline, the right mindset, and a sound trading plan in order for you to succeed in it. For beginners, the best way to trade commodities is through an online broker.

4 Deadly Commodities Trading Sins

Everyone knows the seven deadly sins: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth. But did you know there are commodities trading sins as well? Sins that are surprisingly similar to the seven sins, and that can be just as deadly to your online commodities trading career. The online commodities trading sins are: pride, envy, greed, and laziness. I`m sure there is a way to work in the other three if I really try, but let`s stick with these four, since they cause many traders a great deal of difficulty.

Where do these sins come into play? From traders` reactions to the markets, most markets have predictable trends and repeated patterns. Why? Most commodities trading movements in the markets are a result of the motivations of people in those markets. Many people say that what drives the markets are greed and fear. Greed makes people buy, and fear makes them sell. Greed and fear can benefit traders: Greed, or at least the desire to make money, is why we trade.. Fear is a healthy response that occurs when we sense danger or disaster closing in, and it motivates us to get out of a bad situation.

But when they get out of control, greed and fear are two of the basic psychological pitfalls that make online commodities trading fail.

Other pitfalls include:

1. Wanting to seem wise,
2. Not admitting to making mistakes (pride),
3. Trying to do what everyone else is doing because they seem to be doing better (envy),
4. Being unwilling to stop your commodities trading in case there is more money to be made (greed), OR
5. Being too willing to follow advice and not find out on your own when you trade (laziness).

If you want to improve at online commodities trading, you must identify the mistakes you make consistently so that you can recognize your own stumbling blocks. Look back at the ten losing trades you've made in the last few weeks. Can you find any likenesses? Look closely and be honest with yourself. Part of being a good trader is being able to look at things with a clear eye and seeing what`s there, not what you wish was there.

Now this is harder: Look back at your recent successful trades and find the ones that succeeded only by luck. How would they have turned out if you hadn't been lucky? What were your mistakes with those trades? If you're not certain what your mistakes are, or how to correct them, read the next articles in this series. I`ll be discussing each sin separately, with tips on how to overcome them.

Your goal in online commodities trading should not be to trade perfectly all the time, to win on every trade or to be perfect in any other way. Putting too much pressure on yourself to be perfect is one of the best ways to make many mistakes. Besides,, no one can be perfect. You don`t need to be perfect. You can make amazing amounts of money in the markets by being a good, consistent trader. As a trader, you`ll be richly rewarded if you do your job consistently and well. You`ll be doing far better than 99 percent of the other people trading stocks in the market, not to mention money managers, analysts, and other so called EXPERTS

The purpose of identifying your stumbling blocks in your online commodities trading is not to make you feel like you`re a poor trader. All traders, even the best, have weaknesses, they just recognize and control those weaknesses. Instead, this process enables you to develop a realistic sense of your strengths and weaknesses so you can recognize mistakes before they happen. Being realistic, about yourself, about the market, and about the trades you make. This is the way to succeed as a trader.

Reasons For Recessions

Turn on the TV or go to your favorite news site and you hear about the looming recession…the dreaded “R” word of economics. We get bombarded with all kinds of statistics and theories, but have you ever wondered what causes a recession in the first place? Read on to get up to speed and learn what you can do to protect yourself.

Growth Creates Higher Prices

When the economy is growing, businesses are making money. They spend this new revenue, buying more goods to grow their business and share the profits with their employees by giving them a pay raise. Employees go out and spend their bigger salaries, buying more things and creating a higher demand for products.

Companies can capitalize on increased demand by making more goods or raising their prices. Raising prices is especially appealing because, let’s face it, if you could make more money just by asking for it, wouldn't you?

Wages Increase

For a while it’s one big party. Businesses are making more money…you’re getting a raise…everybody’s happy. Eventually, however, prices get so high that demand drops off. People slow their spending and goods start sitting on shelves.

Inventories Rise

By this time, businesses have more goods in production and have to add them to their existing stock. This creates an inventory surplus. Now the market is flooded with goods. That’s when prices should drop, but they can't...at least not right away.

Prices Are Slow to Fall

Companies would like to cut their prices and move their goods, but they’re in a bit of a pickle. If they lower their prices, they’ll make less money and won’t have enough to pay their new bills. Bills that happen to include employee pay raises. This may not come as a shock, but cutting salaries is incredibly unpopular. It’s bad for morale and can really hurt a company’s production.

Businesses have to wait until spending picks up again or start firing employees. Either way, it’s hard for them to lower their prices and sell off the excess inventory. Prices are slow to fall, sales suffer, businesses make less money and the economy slows down as a whole.

How Do You Fix It?

Recessions are a natural part of the business cycle. That being said, there are ways to minimize its effects. The Federal Reserve, Treasury Secretary and Congress all have different tools to stimulate the economy. If they go too far by pumping too much money into the economy, it creates an inflation problem. If they don’t do enough, then the economy remains sluggish and more people lose their jobs. Their goal is to walk the middle ground, doing just enough to get businesses moving again, without creating a monster of inflation.

Protect Yourself

The good news is that you can protect yourself and your family by making solid financial decisions, like spending less than you make and paying yourself first (i.e. saving.). Also, by working for companies that stand the test of time, you can insulate yourself from job loss. Prepare yourself, be patient and you’ll ride through and up the other side again in no time.

Free Online Stock Trading Information

Since the late 1990`s, online stock trading has grown from humble beginnings into a burgeoning worldwide money making machine; and it`s poised to get even bigger as advances in stock trading technology continue to reach new levels.
However, it`s not so much the improvements in trading technologies that have contributed to the popularity of this exciting investment trait...but rather the explosive increase in free online stock trading information.
Let`s face it... whether you`re an experienced online stock trader or a complete novice, you`ll know all too well that while trading techniques and disciplines are important, knowledge is everything! Especially when the vast majority of that knowledge` is completely one hundred percent free!
Where On The Internet Can You Find Free Online Stock Trading Information?
Over the years, I`ve narrowed down my sites of choice` to just two: MSN.com and BigCharts.com. We`ll look MSN.com for the sake of this article, but I strongly recommend you take the time to check out BigCharts.com as well.
Ok, for MSN.com...
Go to the Home Page. Click on Money in the alphabetical links. Then, click on Investing in the navigation bar. This will bring you to a page that is chock a block full of valuable free online stock trading information!
To actually check out a specific stock, enter its stock symbol into the symbol box located near the top right of the screen. Play around with the drop down menu next to it and decide whether you want to get a quote, a chart, or do some hardcore research.
NB: While writing this article I checked out Bill Gates piggy bank` by entering his company`s symbol MSFT into the symbol box...clicking on Go...and studying the data that was presented to me...
Ouch!...that stock is not looking well right now!
Another interesting link found at the bottom of the stock information box on any given stock info page within this site is the Stock Scouter Rating. It`s based on a 1 being the worst possible forecast outcome for a stock, and a 10 being the best. For the record, MSFT, Microsoft, has a current rating of 5.
Immediately to the right of the Stock Scouter Rating figure you`ll find a link entitled: What do these terms mean? Click on it and you`ll see a new window appear to the right of your screen... totally packed with free online stock trading terminologies and definitions. For newbies`, it`s a goldmine of valuable information!
Another helpful tool on this page is the Expected Risk Return indicator. Here you`ll find that Risk is estimated by the expected volatility of the stock`s price that is, how much it goes up and down. Return is how much money you might make if you owned the stock. The ideal investment would have very low risk and very high return. Call me a cynic, but I doubt such investments actually exist in the real world. Personally, I love volatility.
Other Recommended Links And Info Sources On MSN.com
Jubak`s Journal is always worth a read. Plus, you can see at a glance how the three main indices are doing i.e. Dow, Nasdaq and S and P. You can research stocks and funds, get market reports, check out the latest IPO`s, get the expert`s picks, see the latest news on stocks and world markets, check out the charts, SEC filings, company reports, interest rate and currency reports... and you know what? You can even get a birds eye view of what the executives at the helm of your chosen company have been doing with their own shares!
I must admit, I tend to feel all warm and fuzzy inside when I see that executives of any company I hold stock in are buying up like crazy. It`s not a fail proof indicator, but it`s mighty reassuring all the same.
So there you have it... ample proof that the internet is bursting at the cyber walls with free online stock trading information.
In fact, when you type in the key phrase free online stock trading information into Google search, you`ll see that there are over 54,200,000 results, i.e. web pages featuring some form of free online stock trading information, ...
Incredibly, all the information contained in this article comes from less than 10 of them!
